Cougars Add Eastern Washington to 2012 Football Schedule

Jan. 8, 2010

PULLMAN, Wash. - For the first time in over 100 years, Washington State University and Eastern Washington University will meet on the football gridiron during the 2012 season, the two schools announced Friday.

"(Eastern Washington AD) Bill (Chaves) and I have been discussing this for a while and found a date that works for both schools," said WSU Director of Athletics Jim Sterk. "Scheduling is becoming more difficult in college football and securing a date this far in advance is a win-win situation, not just for the schools but all football fans in the state of Washington."

The meeting, set for Sept. 8, 2012, at Martin Stadium, will be the third in the series, though the teams have not played since 1908.

The two schools have some common links to their football programs as WSU head coach Paul Wulff coached at Eastern Washington for 15 years, the final eight as head coach, prior to becoming the Cougars' 31st head coach in December, 2007. Additionally, five current Cougar assistant coaches were on Wulff's staff while at EWU.

In addition to Eastern Washington, the Cougars are also tentatively scheduled to face Utah and UNLV during the 2012 season, along with a full Pacific-10 Conference schedule.
