Early in the game WSU struggled offensively. Taking their first possession at Idaho's 22 yard line after a
Vandal fumble, the Cougs were unable to manage a first down or find the
endzone and gave the ball back to Idaho. However, on its second possession
WSU went on a 12-play, 52-yard march that ended in a Rian Lindell field
goal and put the Cougars on the board 3-0 at the 3:42 mark in the opening
quarter.
Then it was Taylor's turn. Midway through the second quarter,
backup quarterback Paul Mencke pushed the Cougars downfield to the Idaho 10
yard line, setting up Taylor's first touchdown of the afternoon. Facing
third-and-goal, Mencke lofted the ball into the right corner of the endzone
where Taylor elevated over his defender and hauled in a precious red zone
touchdown.
Two WSU possessions later, quarterback Steve Birnbaum brought
the WSU offense from its own 20 yard line to the Vandal 20. On first down,
Birnbaum fired a pass into the left corner intended for Taylor which was
batted in the air by cornerback Dennis Gibbs. But Gibbs' effort was all
for not as Taylor snatched the loose ball out of the sky for touchdown No.
2.
WSU's 17-0 halftime lead looked daunting for Idaho, but a 32-yard
kickoff return and position at their own 38 yard line gave the Vandals hope
of a better second half. On first down, quarterback John Welsh connected
with Ethan Jones for a 46-yard pickup and position at the WSU 16 yard line.
Two plays later, facing second-and-one at the WSU 7, Welsh's bid to put
the Vandals on the board was outmatched by cornerback Lamont Thompson.
Thompson's first of two interceptions for the game saved an Idaho touchdown
and crushed some Vandal hopes for a comeback.
Two plays later, Birnbaum
and Taylor connected to fuel the fire. With the line of scrimmage deep at
the WSU 3 yard line, Birnbaum dropped back and found Taylor across the
middle. Taylor then weaved his way to the endzone for a Cougar-record
97-yard touchdown reception. With less than two minutes expired in the
second half, WSU had a 24-0 lead.
The Cougar defensive shutout would last a few minutes longer, but was finally snapped when Ben Davis nailed a
43-yard field goal at the 7:56 mark in the third stanza. Down 21 points,
the score failed to scratch the Cougars' armor, but 13 seconds later, the
Idaho defense provided a dent. On first down from his own 20 yard line,
Birnbaum fell under pressure and fired a pass straight into the arms of
Falemao Tosi who rumbled the remaining 12 yards for the touchdown. Davis'
point-after made it 24-10 and gave the Vandals a fighting chance.
Fight, they would, pounding a 13-play, 79-yard drive all the way into the Cougar
endzone with 4:29 left to play in the game. Joel Thomas' one-yard rush on
fourth-and-goal gave the Vandals a chance to pull within seven, but Davis'
kick was blocked and WSU led 24-16. The Vandals did regain possession with
26 seconds of game time remaining, but magical comeback hopes were not to
be and WSU held on to win its third straight.
In addition to the hat-trick and record-setting reception, Taylor finished with 254 yards receiving, one
yard short of Deron Pointer's record output against Arizona State in 1993.
James Price led the defense with 13 tackles while Thompson managed nine
tackles and half of the defense's four interceptions. The two picks,
Thompson's eighth and ninth of his career, moved him into a tie for seventh
all-time.
