Cougars Overwhelm Ninth-Ranked Trojans 34-14

October 11, 1986

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State's dominating 34-14 win over the ninth-ranked USC Trojans was the school's first over the Trojans since 1957 and snapped a 16-game USC win streak over WSU.

The Cougars led 24-0 in the third quarter (17-0 at halftime) and 34-7 until the Trojans scored with 58 seconds left to play. WSU limited USC to 75 net yards rushing and two first downs rushing.

WSU's 510 yards in total offense were the most against USC since ASU's 571 in 1983. Additionally, WSU's 309 yards on the ground were the most against USC since Texas A&M gained 486 in the Bluebonnet Bowl.

The Cougars held a remarkable 40:30-19:30 advantage in possession time. Kerry Porter rushed for 164 yards (27 carries), including 108 in the second half, and Ed Tingstad had a career high 68 yards (10 carries). Ed Blount hit 13 out of 20 passes for two scores and 201 yards.

USC lost three fumbles and two interceptions, a total of five turnovers. Michael James and Kitrick Taylor each caught TD passes from Pac-10 Player-of-the-Week Blount. Shawn Landrum (20-yard return) and Bob Gregory (no return) each intercepted USC passes.
