WSU AGAINST UTAH VALLEY; GREAT WEST:
Wednesday will mark the first meeting between Washington State and Utah Valley.
Utah Valley is a member of the Great West Conference, one of five basketball members.
The Cougars have faced just one of those five members, Texas-Pan American.
WSU is 3-1 against UTPA, having won the last three matchups...the two teams met most recently during the 2010-11 season, prior to that during the 2001-02, 2000-01 and 1999-2000 seasons.
PERFECT AT FRIEL IN NOVEMBER:
With its win over Eastern Washington in its season opener, WSU improved to 43-0 all-time in the month of November at Friel Court.
The Cougars have won 43-straight November games in Pullman and are 45-1 (the loss came before the Cougars moved into Beasley Coliseum).
WSU's only loss in Pullman in November came against Colorado State, Nov., 30, 1962, by a score of 77-47.
The Cougars are 1-0 after defeating Eastern Washington, 88-69, Saturday Nov. 10 in their season opener at Beasley Coliseum.
Brock Motum picked up where he left off with his fourth career double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds...he added two blocked shots.
Fellow senior Mike Ladd and sophomore DaVonté Lacy chipped in 15 points apiece, while D.J. Shelton hit the boards hard for a career-high 12 rebounds.
Royce Woolridge, Junior Longrus, Brett Boese, James Hunter, Dominic Ballard and Keaton Hayenga each made their debuts for the Cougars.
Woolridge was the only non-returning letterwinner to start for the Cougars...the redshirt sophomore sat out last year due to NCAA transfer rules after transferring from Kansas.
Woolridge finished with 7 points, 2 assists and 1 blocked shot while starting at point guard.
MOTUM EYES 1,000 POINTS:
With 956 points, senior Brock Motum is just 44 points away from becoming the 33rd Cougar to reach 1,000 career points and the third in the last four seasons.
Klay Thompson scored his 1,000th point during the 2009-10 season and Reggie Moore reached 1,000 points in the Cougs second-to-last game of the 2011-12 season.
COUGARS GO `DOWN UNDER':
The Cougars spent two weeks in Australia, Aug. 3-16, 2012, as part of an NCAA approved international tour.
The team made stops in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane/Gold Coast and Cairns, playing five games in all.
WSU went 2-3 in those games, three of them against teams of the NBL (National Basketball League), Australia's highest professional league.
Brock Motum averaged 27.2 points in the five games, including a 41-point output against the Cairns Taipans in the final game of the tour.
Reggie Moore averaged 13.0, Dexter Kernich-Drew 8.4 and Mike Ladd 6.4 points per game.
The Cougar roster contains three Aussies; Motum (Brisbane), Kernich-Drew (Melbourne) and James Hunter (Sydney).
MOTUM A CANDIDATE FOR THE WOODEN AWARD:
Senior Brock Motum is one of 50 preseason candidates for the 2012-13 John R. Wooden Award.
Motum is the second Cougar in three seasons to make the list, as Klay Thompson was named to the preseason top-50 prior to the 2010-11 season.
Before that, Derrick Low and Kyle Weaver were both named to the preseason top-50 for the 2007-08 season. Thompson went on to make the midseason top-30 cut in 2010-11, as did Low in 2007-08.
This season's preseason list contains student-athletes from 16 different conferences, including four from the Pac-12 Conference.
Motum is joined by André Roberson (Colorado), Allen Crabbe (California), and Solomon Hill (Arizona).
WSU DEFEATS SAINT MARTIN'S IN EXHIBITION ACTION:
WSU defeated Saint Martin's, 62-60, Tuesday, Nov. 6 in exhibition action at Beasley Coliseum.
Brock Motum led all scorers with 21 points, while Mike Ladd added 12 points and 7 rebounds.
Royce Woolridge finished with 10 points and a game-high 3 steals, while D.J. Shelton led the team with 9 rebounds.
COUGARS MAKE 12TH POSTSEASON APPEARANCE:
Washington State competed in the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) in 2011-12, marking the first CBI and 12th overall postseason appearance in school history.
WSU advanced to the championship series, marking the second-straight season the Cougars have reached at least the semifinals of their postseason tournament...last year WSU advanced to the semifinals of the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) in New York, falling to eventual-champion Wichita State in the semifinals.
The Cougars are 17-13 all-time in postseason play.
WSU also compiled its most single-season postseason wins with a 4-2 record in the CBI...last season the Cougars went 3-1 in the NIT.
In the last two seasons WSU has gone 7-3 in postseason play.
WSU has made it to six NCAA Tournaments (6-6) and five NITs (7-5).
Washington State became the third Pac-12 school to advance to the championship round of the CBI as Oregon State won in 2008 and Oregon won the tournament in 2011.
MOTUM'S BREAKOUT JUNIOR SEASON:
Washington State junior Brock Motum had a breakout season in 2011-12 as he led the Cougars and the Pac-12 in scoring in both the overall games and conference only games.
Motum averaged 18.0 points per game in all games, edging out Oregon State's Jared Cunningham with 17.9 points per game.
In league games the Australian averaged 20.7 points per game, over a point per game ahead of Cunningham with 19.2 points per game.
He also ranked sixth in field goal percentage (.554) and seventh in rebounds per game (6.4 rpg), making him the only player in the Pac-12 to rank in the top-13 in scoring, field goal percentage and rebounding.
Motum finished the season ranked 38th in the country in points per game and 26th in field goal percentage.
In contrast to his junior season, Motum played 799 minutes in 54 games his first two seasons combined at Washington State...this season he clocked 1,072 minutes of action.
In his first two seasons he averaged 5.9 points and 2.3 rebounds a game, but still did it at a high shooting clip, .591.
Last season alone Motum had 293 more points than he did in his first two seasons combined (613 compared to 320), and averaged 18.0 points per game, 12.1 more points than his first two seasons.
Motum also had 216 rebounds last season, more than his 72 his first two years combined, for a 6.4 rebounding average, over four rebounds more a game.
He continued to shoot at a high clip at .554 last season for a .567 career field goal percentage.
MOTUM JOINS ELITE COMPANY:
Junior Brock Motum grabbed his 200th rebound of the 2011-12 season March 7 in the Pac-12 Tournament and had 613 points and 216 rebounds last season.
He joined two other Cougars, Steve Puidokas and Larry Beck as the only WSU players to reach 500 points and 200 boards in a season.
Beck had 506 points and 214 rebounds in 1955-56, while Puidokas recorded 559 points and 259 rebounds in 1974-75.
