Cougar Basketball Picked to Finish Fifth in Pac-10 Preseason Poll

Oct. 28, 2010

LOS ANGELES - Returning all five starters from last year's squad, the Washington State University men's basketball team has been chosen to finish fifth in the Pacific-10 Conference in 2010-11, according to a poll of media members who cover Pac-10 basketball.

"Being picked fifth in the media poll is probably about where we should be," WSU Head Coach Ken Bone said. "It's quite a jump from finishing 10th in the conference last year, but we do have some really good players coming back along with some new kids that should be able to contribute right away. I don't feel like the Pac-10 is back to where it was a few years ago, but we are going to be stronger this season as a conference than we were last. I think Washington and California represented us well in the NCAA tournament last year. I'd be surprised if at least Washington doesn't do extremely well this year along with whoever else rises to the top."

The poll, released at the league's annual media day in Los Angeles Thursday, had Washington finishing first with 33 of the 35 first-place votes and 348 points. Arizona was chosen second with one first place vote and 296 points. UCLA received the other first place vote, coming in third with 281 points. Arizona State (fourth, 215), Washington State (fifth, 191), USC (sixth, 178), California (seventh, 151), Oregon State (eighth, 120), Stanford (ninth, 98) and Oregon (10th, 47) rounded out the poll.

Before opening the season Nov. 13 at home against Southern (Louisiana), Washington State will host Lewis-Clark State in an exhibition game Friday, Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. at Friel Court.
