Cougar Basketball Participates in Lentil Festival Activities
Aug. 22, 2011
PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University men's basketball continued its strong presence in the community this summer as it participated in activities in conjunction with the 2011 National Lentil Festival, Friday and Saturday, Aug. 19 and 20 in downtown Pullman.
Friday, the 12 members of the Cougar basketball team that were already in town for the start of classes Aug. 22 spent an hour downtown at the WSU Athletics booth, signing autographs at the street fair. The team also took turns running the pop-a-shot activity, competing against fans in a basketball shooting contest.
At the Lentil Parade Saturday, 14 men's basketball student-athletes participated. The team walked in the parade, handing out WSU Athletics schedule cards, t-shirts and basketballs.
"The Lentil Festival is always a fun time and is an event that is unique to Pullman," senior forward Charlie Enquist said. "It's a great opportunity to get out in the community to interact with our fans and give back to the people that support us."
The Palouse Region grows a third of the lentils produced in the United States. Since 1989, the National Lentil Festival has celebrated the legume that is consumed by people all over the world.
This summer the Cougars have been busy in the community. In June WSU men's basketball held three camps, including a day camp for kids ages 8-14. In July members of the Cougar basketball team participated in Palouse Habitat for Humanity and Pullman Learning Center's sports week. The Cougars will be able to be seen more in the community in the coming weeks, as they will be signing autographs and meeting and greeting fans at Cougar Fan Appreciation Day at Martin Stadium, Saturday, Aug. 27 and at WSU Family Day on Mooberry Track Saturday, Sept. 10.
An Evening with Cougar Basketball is schedule for Saturday, Sept. 24 at the CUB Senior Ballroom. This year's event features members of the men's basketball team and coaching staff, including head coach Ken Bone, along with members of the women's basketball program and keynote speaker, former head coach, Dick Bennett.
