BANGKOK, Thailand - Washington State center Aron Baynes scored 17 points and added a game-high nine rebounds as Australia routed Chinese Taipei 106-66 in a men's basketball classification contest at the World University Games, Wednesday night.
With the victory, Australia advances to play the Czech Republic in a game that will determine 17th place in the 24-team tournament. The two teams met last Sunday in a second phase game won by the Czech Republic 69-53. The rematch is set for 9:15 p.m. PDT, Thursday.
In other classification play, Cougar guard Thomas Abercrombie and New Zealand were defeated 104-86 by Ukraine. The Auckland native had two points and two rebounds in the loss. New Zealand will play China for 15th place at 11:30 p.m. PDT, Thursday.
Australia was in control throughout its game with Chinese Taipei using a 22-2 run over the latter part of the first quarter to take a 28-13 lead. Australia led 49-35 at intermission and stretched its advantage to 74-49 after three quarters.
Points in the paint were 64-34 in favor of Australia, which also outrebounded Chinese Taipei 44-21 and held a 21-8 edge in points off turnovers.
In Ukraine's victory over New Zealand, the game was close until later into the third quarter. Ukraine led 21-14 after one quarter and 49-40 at halftime. Ukraine's still held a 10-point lead at 54-44 midway, then outscored New Zealand 33-23 over the next 10 minutes to put the game away.
