NORTH SYDNEY, New South Wales - Brock Motum scored 28 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as Washington State University men's basketball defeated Norths Bears, 77-64, Thursday, at North Sydney Indoor Sports Centre (NSISC). The game was WSU's second of a its five-game Australian tour.

Motum scored 16 of his 28 points in the second half, along with grabbing seven of his 13 rebounds. He was 10-for-17 from the field and made his only 3-point attempt. Royce Woolridge was the only other Cougar in double figures with 10 points. Dexter Kernich-Drew added 9 points, while Junior Longrus and D.J. Shelton each had 8 points. Mike Ladd continued his solid work on the boards with 9 rebounds, while Reggie Moore dished out 6 assists.

Tanner Kerry led the Bears with 16 points, while Jarrad Weeks added 14. Ryan Thompson grabbed a team-high 5 rebounds, while James McCann dished out 5 assists. The Cougars outrebounded the Bears, 42-22, and had 12 second-chance points, while the Norths didn't have any.

Washington State scored first and didn't look back, leading the entire game. WSU's scoring was well-rounded in the first quarter, as Ladd, Motum, Shelton and Kernich-Drew each had 4 points, as it led 24-10 after the first 10 minutes. Motum scored 8 points in the second quarter and Kernich-Drew 5 in the second period as the two Aussies had 21 of WSU's 43 points. The Cougars held on to their 14-point lead at halftime, leading 43-29 after the first 20 minutes.

The Bears put full-court pressure on the Cougars to open the third quarter, cutting the lead by 2 points, to 12, 59-47. Motum had 18 points by the end of the third quarter. Woolridge scored four of his 10 points in the fourth quarter and the Cougars held off a late charge by the Bears as they hung on for the 13-point, 77-64, victory.

Washington State will take on the Wollongong Hawks of the NBL, Friday, Aug. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at The Snakepit (Friday, Aug. 10 at 2:30 a.m. PT).
