Bjornstad to Join Cougar Basketball Team

July 2, 2009

PULLMAN, Wash. - Steven Bjornstad (Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River HS) has signed a Financial Aid Agreement with Washington State University and will join the men's basketball team beginning with the 2009-10 season, head coach Ken Bone announced Thursday.

"Steven adds depth to a position we really needed in the post," Bone said. "He has a really nice frame, is a very skilled big kid who can pass it and is an outstanding shooter. I believe he has the skill set to develop into a real nice Pac-10 player."

Vancouver, Wash. native Bjornstad (6-10, 225, C) is a two-time 3A All-State honoree and was named the 3A Greater St. Helens Most Valuable Player in 2008-09. A two-time all-league selection, he averaged 14.6 points, 9.6 rebounds and 4.0 blocks under the league's coach of the year, David Long, as the Chieftains (21-8) finished second at the State championship in 2008-09, the best finish in school history.

During his junior season, Bjornstad led CRHS to a 21-7 record while averaging 17.0 points, 10.8 rebounds and 4.0 blocks per game. He shot 80 percent from the field and helped the Chieftains to the 3A Greater St. Helens League Championship in 2007-08.

Bjornstad joins an incoming freshman class that includes Anthony Brown (6-5, 205 SG, Spokane, Wash./Shadle Park HS), Reggie Moore (6-1, 175, G, Seattle, Wash./Brewster Academy-NH), Brock Motum (6-9, 215, PF, Brisbane, Australia/Australia Institute of Sport) and Xavier Thames (6-3, 180, PG, Elk Grove, Calif./Pleasant Grove, Calif.).

Bjornstad marks the third Washington native to join the WSU men's basketball team beginning in the fall of 2009, as the Cougars now boast a roster with six Washingtonians.
