PULLMAN, Wash. - Redshirt freshman guard Thomas Abercrombie has been granted his release from the Washington State University men's basketball program and plans to return to his homeland of New Zealand to pursue his basketball career and continue his education, WSU Head Coach Tony Bennett announced Wednesday.

"Thomas will be missed," Bennett added. "We are grateful for his two years with us and the contributions he made to our program both as a redshirt and this season."

Abercrombie spent two seasons with the Cougars. He redshirted his freshman season in 2006-07 and saw action in 12 games in 2007-08. A 6-foot-6 guard, Abercrombie scored a career-high five points against North Carolina A&T Dec. 28 in front of a home crowd at Friel Court. He grabbed a career-best seven rebounds in 19 minutes of action against Mississippi Valley State, Nov. 24 at the Cougar Hardwood Challenge at Spokane Arena.

"Thomas was a tremendous asset in practice with his great athleticism," Bennett said. "He was one of the most-liked players amongst his teammates and is a first-rate young man and an excellent student."

During the summer of 2007 Abercrombie represented his native New Zealand at the World University Games. He averaged 6.3 points and 4.5 rebounds in four games including 10 points and six boards in the team's victory over Thailand.
