CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP) - David Palmer scored 14 points as Southern Utah beat Washington State 55-36 on Friday night.

DeAngelo Newsom added 13 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Thunderbirds (2-1), who held Washington (2-2) leading scorer Marcus Moore scoreless on 0-for-9 shooting.

With the score tied at 6-6 with 13 minutes remaining in the first half, Palmer hit a 3-pointer to spark a 17-0 Southern Utah run. The Cougars finally scored on a jumpshot by Thomas Kelati with 6:08 to play in the first half.

The Thunderbirds built a 29-13 halftime lead, but managed just five points in the first 11 minutes of the second half. The Cougars cut the lead to six points, but Southern Utah scored seven straight points to open up a 43-28 lead with just under six minutes to play.

"You can wrap it up in any kind of ribbons you want, but we stunk," WSU Head Coach Dick Bennett said. "They beat us up and dominated us on the glass. The loss doesn't bother me as much as the performance. We lacked heart."

Kelati scored 13 points and Shami Gill had 10 rebounds for the Cougars, who shot 7-for-36 from 3-point range.

The 36 three-point attempts were one shy of the school record. The 36 points scored were the fewest since a 40-36 loss to No. 5 Oregon State in Pullman, Feb. 20, 1982.

WSU senior guard Marcus Moore did not score in a game for the first time in his career.
