OAKLAND, Calif. - Reserve senior Sean Marks scored 12 points and freshman
starter Sean Lampley added 10 points and 11 rebounds as California handled
visiting Washington State 69-60 in front of 8,125 at the New Arena in
Oakland Thursday night.
The Cougars (9-16 overall, 2-12 Pac-10) got a game-high 13 points from
Carlos Daniel in his return from a left ankle injury, outrebounded the
Golden Bears 48-40 and held Cal's dangerous perimeter duo of Thomas Kilgore
and Geno Carlisle in check. But WSU couldn't overcome 22 turnovers and a
poor shooting night of 36.5 percent from the field.
The Golden Bears (10-12 overall, 6-7 Pac-10) maintained a two-point halftime
advantage, 29-27, although WSU committed 13 turnovers in the half.
Leif Nelson, WSU's 6-foot-10, 270 center, gave the Cougars a 37-36
second-half lead after he set a high screen for Steve Slotemaker, rolled
down the middle of the lane and received a pass from the block by Daniel for
an easy layup. After a media timeout, Slotemaker increased the lead to
three points on a slashing drive to the hoop.
A jump shot by Kenyon Jones tied the game 46-46 with 8:54 on the clock and
Cal took a 47-46 lead after Kilgore made the first of two free throws.
Slotemaker grabbed the defensive rebound when Jones, a 6-10, 270 center,
rolled up the back of Slotemaker's legs. He exited the game at 8:38 under
his own power and returned to action at 5:47 with the Cougars down 53-48.
The Cougars turned the ball over on their next two possessions that allowed
Jones to score four straight Cal points to put the Bears ahead 57-48 with
4:13 to go.
Quotes from Washington State head coach Kevin Eastman - "I think we gave
them the basketball a good portion of the time. They didn't look for
penetration earlier in the game. We were shutting down Carlisle and Kilgore
so well that (King) might have decided to take it upon himself."
