PULLMAN, Wash. - A 3-point basket by Eddie House with 13 seconds left lifted visiting Arizona State to an 86-85 win over Washington State in front of 3,103 Sunday at Friel Court.

The Cougars (7-7 overall, 0-3 Pacific-10) lost their third in a row to open 0-3 in the Pac-10 Conference for the fifth time in seven seasons. The Sun Devils (12-5 overall, 2-2 Pacific-10) won their first conference road game in 14 tries.

Washington State had a chance to win the contest with 2.1 seconds, but a 3-point attempt from the left baseline by forward Carlos Daniel missed short. Daniel posted game-highs of 28 points, his career best, and 14 rebounds.

Daniel rallied the Cougars from a four-point deficit by scoring nine points during an 11-2 run to give WSU an 85-80 lead with 33 seconds to go. ASU quickly cut the margin to two points.

A long court pass from Cougar Chris Crosby was intercepted by Sun Devil Kelly Urit, who was fouled by Daniel. Urit made the first free throw attempt, but missed the second. Jeremy Veal collected the long rebound and hit a jump shot from just inside the 3-point arc to make the score 85-83 WSU.

Daniel had a breakaway dunk, but was fouled hard by Sun Devil point guard Ahlon Lewis. Daniel was slow to get up, then missed both foul shots. Lewis grabbed the rebound and found House on the right wing for the game winner.

WSU still had 13 seconds to work a shot, but point guard Blake Pengelly dribbled the ball off his thigh and out of bounds. Crosby then fouled Lewis, who missed his two free throw attempts. Pengelly pushed the ball down court, but ASU knocked the ball out which set up Daniel's final 3-point attempt.

And there are correctable things that we hope won't consistently happen throughout the course of the rest of the games. We got a little fatigued at the end, and I think some of the turnovers were fatigue turnovers. What you saw really in the last couple of possessions is exactly how they can beat you. They can hit threes and they have unbelievable defensive quickness."

Quotes from Washington State senior Carlos Daniel - "It was a let down at the end. We should have pulled it out, but didn't. They played hard and we played hard. They just came out on top. It was like a total letdown because we were down and came back. The last couple of shots just killed us.

"They were doing a lot of doubling with the big and another guard to try and swipe the ball. They were trying to keep the ball out of my hands in the second half. Chris Crosby did a good job of shooting the ball and Will did a great job of coming in and sparking us."

"It comes down to concentration. Their pressure wasn't anything we faced before. This time around, for whatever reason, we didn't handle the pressure of the game well. I wouldn't say their defensive pressure, but the pressure of the situation weighed heavy on the guys. I know we're going to continue to play hard regardless of who's rooting for us and who isn't.
