Cougars Fall To Oregon State 65-58
PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) - David Lucas scored 22 points and Chris Stephens added 19 to lead Oregon State to a 65-58 victory over Washington State on Thursday night. The Beavers (9-12, 3-8 Pacific-10) snapped a six-game losing streak by erasing a 54-51 deficit in the final 5:24. Oregon State had been 0-5 on the road this season. Jeff Varem scored 15 points and Marcus Moore had 14 for Washington State (11-11, 5-7). The Cougars were trying to win a third consecutive Pac-10 game for the first time since 1995-96. Moore powered past Lamar Hurd for a layin with 1:55 left to narrow Oregon State's lead to 59-58. The Beavers scored the remaining six points on free throws, though Moore nearly tied the game at 61 when his 3-point attempt rattled in and out with 18 seconds to go. Oregon State led most of the game, due partly to a 30-20 advantage in rebounds. Washington State led 14-8 before Chris Stephens hit three of Oregon State's four 3-pointers in a 2½-minute span to push the Beavers ahead 22-16. Lucas went 8-for-11 from the field and 6-for-6 from the free-throw line, and he led all players with eight rebounds. Oregon State sank 20 of 28 free throws, including 15 of 21 in the second
half. Washington State went 9-for-12 at the line.
