Cougars Can't Overcome ASU's Hot Shooting

PULLMAN, Wash. - Arizona State freshman forward Ike Diogu scored 26 points Thursday night as the Sun Devils beat Washington State 87-54.

Diogu added 10 rebounds and Tommy Smith scored 17 points for Arizona State (14-7, 6-4 Pac-10).

Chris Schlatter led Washington State (5-14, 0-10) with 14 points. The Cougars have lost 10 consecutive games, 17 Pac-10 games in a row and 29 of their past 30 Pac-10 games.

The Cougars trailed 52-36 at the half despite shooting 70 percent from the field. Arizona State shot 68 percent in the first half and 65 percent for the game, and the Sun Devils tied a school record by hitting 72.7 percent of their 3-pointers (8 of 11).

Arizona State held WSU to 25 percent shooting from the field (6 of 24) in the second half. The Cougars were outrebounded 30-17 and had 20 turnovers, compared to 13 for the Sun Devils.

WSU sank 6 of 7 3-pointers in the first half and 8 of 13 (62 percent) for the game, but was held to a season low for total points.

Diogu, a 6-8, 250-pound forward, scored Arizona State's last eight points of the first half and first six points of the second half.

Arizona State has won its past three games against Washington State by an average of 42 points.
