Men's Basketball Signs Three for the 2012-13 Season

The Cougars add a guard, a small forward and a forward to the mix.

No stranger to the West Coast, Jared Barrett enters his second season with the Cougars as the coordinator of basketball operations after serving as an assistant coach the previous eight years at Utah Valley University and Sacramento State.

At Washington State University, Barrett is responsible for executing summer camps, coordinating team travel and overseeing student-athlete academics, among various other tasks.

Prior to joining the WSU men's basketball staff in 2009-10, Barrett spent the previous two seasons as the top assistant at Utah Valley. With the Wolverines, Barrett served as the guards' position coach, while working with scheduling, recruiting and on-the-floor coaching. Barrett was an integral part of UVU's seven-year transition from junior college to NCAA Division I.

Prior to his two seasons at Utah Valley, Barrett served as an assistant coach at Sacramento State for six seasons (2001-07), serving as the top assistant coach his final three seasons. With the Hornets, Barrett oversaw game scheduling and on-floor coaching, as well as assisting with the instruction of the team's guards. He also prepared scouting reports for all games and ran the team camp which featured over 100 high school teams.

Before joining the staff at Sacramento State, Barrett spent two years as the head junior varsity coach at Eastern Oregon (1998-00). While at EOU, he was responsible for all the daily operations of the team. Barrett implemented the team's playbook, conducted tryouts and scheduled games. He was also responsible for the school's youth basketball camps. Barrett also served as the assistant strength and conditioning coach for the basketball program.

Before his stint at Eastern Oregon, Barrett was the head coach for the girls' junior varsity team at La Grande High School (La Grande, Ore.) for two seasons.

In his playing days, Barrett was a two-sport athlete. He began his collegiate playing career at Olympic College in Bremerton, Wash. where he was an all-league baseball player (pitcher) and competed in basketball. He was also involved in extracurricular activities, serving as the school's student body president his sophomore year.

From Olympic College, Barrett moved on to Eastern Oregon where he was named the team's most valuable player following the 1996-97 season. That season, he led the team in rebounding (8.0 per game) and was second on the squad in scoring (12.0 points per game). As a junior, Barrett led his team to the regional playoffs.

Barrett graduated from Madison High School in Rexburg, Idaho, where he played both baseball and basketball. As a high school senior, Barrett averaged over 16 points and eight rebounds per game.

Barrett is involved in the community having worked with the Oregon Special Olympics. He has also coached AAU basketball and little league baseball.

Barrett earned his bachelor's degree in physical education and health from Eastern Oregon in 1998. He completed his teaching credential from EOU in 2000. Barrett and his wife, Aimee, have five children, Jordan, Ashley, Brady, Caeden and Aria.
