Crimson Pounds Out 15 Hits In 11-2 Win Over Gray
Oct. 14, 2005
PULLMAN, Wash. - Zach Franklin and Paul Gran each had three hits while David Roberts worked five strong innings as the Crimson squad posted an 11-2 victory over Gray in Game Four of the annual Crimson and Gray World Series Thursday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field.
With the victory the Crimson clinches the series by taking a 3-1 lead with only Friday's contest remaining.
Crimson jumped out first with a run in the second as Zach McAngus led off with a double and came around to score on Jared Prince's sacrifice fly to center. Gray responded with a pair of runs in the third, its first lead since Game Two, when Greg Lagreid and Jeff Miller scored on an error. Lagreid reached after getting hit by a Roberts pitch and moved to third on Miller's ensuing double. That was it offensively as only one Gray player reached second base after the third inning.
In the bottom of the third, four straight hits, including an RBI double off the bat of Franklin, gave Crimson the lead for good. Kyle Hinrich's two-run single in the third pushed the lead to 5-2 and Nick Hall followed with a two-run single in the fourth that broke the game open. RBI singles from Jay Miller and Gran closed out the scoring in the fifth inning.
Roberts took the win as he went five innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits with two strikeouts. Steve Kost and Ryan Snell each worked an inning of hitless relief.
For the game the Crimson pounded out 15 hits, three each from Franklin and Gran, with Franklin scoring three runs and Jay Miller driving in three.
The Gray squad was led by Jeff Miller's two hits and a run scored while Mike Gilbert accounted for the two other hits. On the mound, five pitchers worked in the game, with Nick Cebula suffering the loss as he worked two-plus inning, allowing five runs on seven hits.
The fifth and final game of the Crimson and Gray World Series takes place Friday at Bailey-Brayton Field with a 5:30 p.m. first pitch. The game makes the end of the fall season for the Cougar baseball team.
