Oct. 9, 2009

PULLMAN, Wash. - Pitching was the story in game two of the 2009 Washington State University Fall World Series at Bailey-Brayton Field, Friday night.

The staffs of Team Fanelli and Team Vucinich combined to give up just four hits and Team Vucinich earned a 1-0 victory to even the best-of-five series at a game each.

Starting pitcher Rusty Shellhorn four and two-thirds shutout innings, gave up one hit and struck out six for Team Fanelli. His counterpart, Travis Cook, tossed four shutout innings, gave up one hit, struck out two and faced the minimum.

In the top of the sixth inning, Team Vucinich scored the only run of the game off reliever Anthony Drobnick (0-1). Brett Jacobs led off with a single up the middle, moved to second on a sacrifice by Riley Tubbs, and scored on a single to left field by Kyle Buchanan.

Kendall Mayer (1-0) pitched two and one-third shutout innings and struck out two to pick up the win. Seth Harvey recorded the final two outs and notched his first save of the series.
