Cougar Baseball in the Minors

PULLMAN, Wash. - Five former Washington State baseball student-athletes took part in the playoffs during the 2012 Minor League Baseball season. The quintet was among 17 former Cougars playing in affiliated professional baseball this season. Both Jared Prince (Frisco, Texas Rangers, AA) and Adam Conley (Jupiter, Miami Marlins, Advanced A) were part of teams that reached the championship series in their respective leagues. Also participating in the postseason were Alex Burg (San Jose, San Francisco Giants, Advanced A), Rusty Shellhorn (Clinton, Seattle Mariners, A) and Taylor Ard (Everett, Mariners, Short Season A). Travis Webb (Louisville, Cincinnati Reds, AAA) was the only former Cougar to play just one step short of MLB. In addition to Prince, Paul Gran (Jacksonville, Marlins) and Matt Oye (Arkansas, Los Angeles Angels) played in AA. Joining Burg and Conley at the Advanced A level were Seth Harvey (Brevard County, Milwaukee Brewers), Jim Murphy (Clearwater, Philadelphia Phillies) and Shea Vucinich (Brevard County). Matt Argyropoulos and Derek Jones (Tri-City, Colorado Rockies) were teammates in Short Season A while Cody Bartlett (GCL Blue Jays, Toronto Blue Jays), Patrick Claussen (GCL Marlins, Marlins), Kyle Johnson (Orem, Angels) and Tommy Richards (GCL Orioles, Baltimore Orioles) all played Rookie baseball.
Ard led the Northwest League in doubles (21) and RBI (58), tied for the league lead with 12 home runs, finished second in slugging percentage (.497) and was 10th in batting average at .284. Conley combined to go 11-5 with a 3.47 ERA and 135 strikeouts in 127 innings between Greensboro (A) and Jupiter. In the playoffs, he made two starts and yielded three runs on five hits with 12 strikeouts in eight innings. Harvey posted a perfect 7-0 mark to go along with 13 saves and a 2.96 ERA in 48 2/3 innings combined between Wisconsin (A) and Brevard County. Murphy led the Florida State League with 43 doubles and added 17 home runs and 85 RBI while batting .274 in 125 games. OTHER COUGARS
