June 9, 2011

HOUSTON - Washington State University pitcher Paris Shewey agreed to terms with the Houston Astros on a free agent deal and will begin his professional career in Florida.

The southpaw tied for the Pacific-10 Conference regular season lead with 10 saves in 2011. He led the Cougars with 23 appearances and his save total is tied for third on the Washington State all-time single-season list. He will report to the Gulf Coast League Astros in Kissimmee, Fla.

"I'm extremely blessed to have this humble beginning to my professional baseball career," Shewey said. "I'm thankful to everyone who has helped me along the way."

As a junior last season, Shewey tied the Cougar single-season record with 30 appearances. He posted a 7-3 record with a 3.47 ERA and two saves. His six victories in relief were one shy of the Washington State record.

The Redmond native appeared in 10 games as sophomore in 2010 after transferring from Edmonds Community College. He was 1-1 with a save and a 3.95 ERA. In his career, Shewey is tied for third at Washington State with 13 saves and tied for sixth with eight wins in relief.
