How have you carried over a hot streak for you that began last season?

I got comfortable with my swing. Last year, I had a streak of swinging at the right pitches and lay off the marginal ones.

In the fall, coach Marbut was talking about you as the shortstop or the third base. How important has it been to have freshman Shea Vucinich at shortstop where you know you are the third baseman?

It's huge. If he couldn't play short, I would have to play somewhere else, then someone else, maybe Alex Burg would have to play third. And someone else would have to move.

What was your mindset at the end of last season when you were a potential draft pick?

It's an exciting opportunity. It didn't happen the way I would have liked it to, so I'm back. Hopefully it will happen again this year.

What was it like being drafted out of high school?

It was cool. It seemed pretty large compared to high school ball. Last year, there was pressure because after your junior year, you lose a lot of your bargaining power. The thing I have learned is a lof of that stuff is out of your control. All you can do is play the best you can.

What does the team have to do to attain its season's goals?

We need to play some strong Pac-10 series. It seems like a lot of teams are beating each other and we are not that far behind all things considered. We obviously would like to have won a couple more games, the ones we thought we had, one at Stanford and one against Arizona State.

What was it like to play in front of a big crowd last Saturday?

That was really cool. I've never played in front of a crowd like that here. Maybe on the road, but not a home team crowd where something good happens and you hear a roar. That was really special.
