Derek Jones Named Pac-10 Baseball Player of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Washington State University freshman outfielder Derek Jones has been named Pacific-10 Conference Baseball Player of the Week for March 23-29, conference commissioner Tom Hansen announced, Tuesday. Jones batted .400 (4-for-10) in a three-game series at California, March 27-29. He homered in each of the three games and added a triple, six runs and six RBI. He posted a .571 on-base percentage and 1.500 slugging percentage. The Snohomish native is currently tied for fifth in the Pac-10 with seven home runs and tied for ninth in the conference with 21 RBI. His home run total is tied for fifth on the WSU all-time freshman list and he is the first Cougar freshman to receive the Pac-10 Player of the Week honor since the conference reunified in 1999. The last WSU freshman to win a conference player of the week award prior to Jones was Jason Grove, March 24, 1998 when the Cougars were in the Pac-10 North.
