UCLA Defeats Cougar Baseball in Final Regular Season Game
May 30, 2010
LOS ANGELES - Dean Espy drove in four runs and No. 7 UCLA defeated No. 20 Washington State 11-1 in the final regular season game for both teams. The Bruins (43-13, 18-9 Pac-10) finished in second place in the Pacific-10 Conference, three games ahead of the third place Cougars (34-20, 15-12 Pac-10). Espy gave UCLA a 1-0 lead in the first with a successful safety squeeze bunt. The Bruins took control of the game with a four-run second off WSU starter Adam Conley (5-3). All four runs came with two outs and Espy capped the rally with a two-run single. The Cougars tallied their lone run in the sixth inning against Rob Rasmussen (9-2). Derek Jones walked with one out, moved to second on a wild pitch, took third on a Matt Fanelli single and scored on a fielder's choice ground ball by Cody Bartlett. UCLA added a run in the seventh and tacked on five more in the eighth against the Cougar bullpen to account for the final score. Washington State expects to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship when the field of 64 teams is announced, Monday at 9:30 a.m. on ESPN. WSU NOTES
