Cougars Down California 13-3, End Season 29-26
May 30, 2004
PULLMAN, Wash. - Grant Richardson drove home five runs and Bryce Chamberlin picked up his eighth win with six innings of work as the Washington State baseball finished the season with a 13-3 win over the California Bears Sunday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field.
Chamberlin (8-3) struck out six and allowed just three hits and no runs through six innings, before turning the game over to Garrett Alwert, who notched his team-best third save. The win was WSU's (29-26 overall, 9-15 Pacific-10) second over the Bears in the three-game weekend series and earned the Cougars a share of eighth place in league play.
California starter Brandon Morrow (1-3), the first of five Bear (25-31, 9-15) pitchers, worked four innings, giving up two runs, both earned. Kyle Christ, Blake Read, Matt Swanson and Matt Brown also saw mound time for the visitors. Dave Nicholson and Garrett Bussiere each had two hits for California.
Richardson hit his team-leading thirteenth home run of the year in the sixth inning, a three-run blast over the centerfield wall, and also drove home runs in the first and seventh innings.
Jay Miller collected three hits to lead WSU's 11-hit attack and boosted his season batting average to a team-leading .355 and a second straight Cougar hitting title. A year ago, as a freshman, he led WSU with a .341 average. The sophomore outfielder now boasts a .348 career batting average.
Washington State put the only runs on the board through the first six innings, building an 8-0 record with single runs in the first and fourth innings, then six runs in the sixth.
Jason Freeman accounted for WSU's first run in the first inning, drilling a single through the left side and eventually scoring on Richardson's grounder to second. Hart did the damage in the fourth, belting a triple to right center with one out. He then scored on a passed ball.
Four of WSU's six runs in the sixth were unearned as the Bears committed a costly two-out error before Richardson powered his home run to drive home the final three runs of the inning. Collin Henderson opened the inning with a double and Hart followed with a bunt single to start WSU's rally. Reddinger's sacrifice accounted for the first run in the sixth and Hart scored on a Freeman grounder. Kaeo Rubin then scored the third run on the California throwing error that allowed Miller to reach base. Richardson followed with his home run, the 28th of his career, placing him eighth on the WSU all-time list.
The Bears responded in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs off Alwert. Bussier started the rally with a double and James Holder followed with a single. Matt Einspahr then was hit by an Alwert pitch to load the bases.
The next three Bear batters collected RBIs as Jeff Dragicevich grounded out to second, Nicholson singled to center and Weiner singled to right field. Alwert then settled down and struck out Brennan Boesch. Jeremy Burchett ended the rally, flying out to center.
Read, the Bears' third relief pitcher, struggled with his control after taking over at the start of the seventh inning. WSU's first two runs of the inning were the result of three hit-batters and two walks, mixed around Reddinger's perfect sacrifice bunt. With the bases loaded, Rubin drew a walk to force home the first run and Freeman was then was hit by a pitch to force home another run as WSU grabbed a 10-3 lead.
Miller then ripped a ball the wind carried to the wall in right field for a double and both J. J. Burress and Rubin scored. Freeman, however, was gunned down going to third on the play. Richardson then delivered a single to left field, scoring Miller and putting WSU on top 13-3. At that point Swanson took over on the mound for California and he promptly struck out pinch hitter Jeremy Farrar.
