Arizona State Prevails 8-2 Over Cougars

TEMPE, Ariz. -- - Arizona State starting pitcher Jason Urquidez scattered seven hits and gave up two runs as the 22nd ranked Sun Devils downed Washington State 8-2 in Pacific-10 baseball action Friday at Packard Stadium.
Urquidez (8-4) threw seven innings, striking out four. Brett Bordes finished up for the Sun Devils allowing two hits and over the final two innings. WSU starter Jayson Miller (2-6) took the loss, giving up six runs on seven hits over 6.1 innings. Brett Sommer relieved Miller in the seventh and Steve Kost came in the eighth with both hurlers giving up two hits and one run.
With the win, ASU improved to 32-22, 13-9 overall in the Pac-10. Washington State fell to 21-35, 1-21 in the conference.
WSU was first on the board in the top of the third when Jeff Miller walked, was sacrificed to second and scored on a Kaeo Rubin double. Rubin advanced to third on a Jason Freeman single and crossed the plate after Jay Miller doubled down the right line to put the Cougars ahead 2-0.
Arizona State tied the score the third when Fox tripled to score Buck, who doubled and stole third, and Curtis, who walked and stole second.
With the contest knotted a 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth, Andrew Romine doubled to left center, plating Tuffy Gosewisch and scoring the game winning run as the Sun Devils took the lead 3-2.
Arizona State added four runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to cement the victory. Joey Hooft singled with one out in the seventh, scoring Travis Buck and Colin Curtis. Buck singled and advanced on a Curtis double. Gosewisch singled to right scoring Hooft and Willy Fox who reached on a walk and advanced to third on Hooft's at bat. The final Sun Devil run came in he eighth when Buck came home on a Curtis single. Buck went 3-for 4 in the win, including two doubles.
The Pac-10 series continues at Packard Stadium Saturday at 6:30 p.m. and wraps up Sunday at 1 p.m.
