SPOKANE, Wash. - Paris Shewey pitched seven shutout innings in his first start of the season and No. 20 Washington State defeated Gonzaga 2-0 in nonconference baseball at Washington Trust Field, Tuesday.

Shewey (7-2) and Bulldogs' starter Liam Baron (0-7) matched zeros on the scoreboard until the Cougars (31-18) broke through for two runs in the top of the seventh.

Derek Jones led off the inning with a double down the right field line. After Shea Vucinich failed in a sacrifice bunt attempt, the WSU junior shortstop lined a ball down the right field line for a RBI-triple. Matt Argyropoulos followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Cougars a 2-0 advantage.

"Paris Shewey was incredible tonight," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "We were hoping for five innings tonight and he gave up seven great innings."

The Cougar southpaw registered the longest outing of his career, gave up three hits, walked three and struck out a career-high six. He retired the last eight Bulldogs (20-33) he faced.

Connor Lambert relieved Shewey in the eighth and ran into trouble when he gave up a one-out single to Drew Heid and walked pinch hitter Andy Hunter. He fell behind 3-1 to Gonzaga's No.3 hitter Mark Castellitto, and then induced a 4-6-3 inning-ending double play. Lambert set the Bulldogs down in order in the ninth for his second save of 2010.

The Cougars close out their nonconference schedule hosting Portland, Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
