Cougars Drop Series-Opener To UC Davis, 2-1, in Extra Innings
May 25, 2007
DAVIS, Calif. - Matt Dempsey's bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 10th inning provided the winning run as UC Davis defeated Washington State 2-1 in a nonconference contest Friday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.
It what was a pitcher's duel throughout, the Aggies pushed across the winning run with two outs in extra innings. With a runner on first and two outs, Ross Humes, the fourth Cougar pitcher of the afternoon, came on to get the left-handed Grant Hirneise. After loading the bases via a walk and hit batter, Dempsey connected for a soft liner to right to score Ryan Royster with the game-winner.
The Cougars tied the game in the ninth without the benefit of a hit. Jeff Miller led off with a walk, was sacrificed to second and reached third on a wild pitch. With one out, Jim Murphy sent a deep fly to left, scoring Miller on the sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1.
Both starting pitchers dominated through the first six innings as Cougar starter Wayne Daman Jr. and the Aggies' Brad McAtee put up zeros on the scoreboard. They did not get there without some concern as Daman surrendered just two hits but issued five walks in that time. McAtee gave up four hits through six, but hit three batters and relied on three double plays to get out of jams.
The Cougars had a golden opportunity in the sixth as Travis Coulter led off with a double followed by a walk to Scott Suttmeier. McAtee got out of trouble with a strikeout, a pickoff and a groundout to keep WSU scoreless through six.
The Aggies broke through in the seventh as Daniel Descalso's single through the left side scored Matt Dempsey from third for the game's first run. Dempsey had reached on a leadoff walk, one of six issued on the day by Daman.
While Daman did not have his best stuff, he battled throughout before exiting with one out in the ninth to end his day with no decision. Daman walked six, fanned two and allowed five hits. Johnson suffered his first loss of the season as he allowed one run on one hit in one inning of work.
The Cougar offense was led by Zach Borba's three hits while Coulter had the other two.
Dempsey had two hits to lead a seven-hit Aggie attack. On the mound McAtee went nine innings, allowing one run on five hits with three strikeouts. Justin Fitzgerald worked the 10th to pick up his first win of the season.
These same two teams continue their series Saturday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
