Gonzaga Nips Cougar Baseball

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga scored four runs in the first inning and held on for an 8-7 victory over Washington State in nonconference baseball, Tuesday. Ryan Carpenter (6-3) picked up the win for Gonzaga (33-16) while redshirt-freshman David Stilley (3-2) took the loss for Washington State (28-23). The Cougars took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on back-to-back, RBI-singles with two outs by senior Jared Prince and freshman Derek Jones. Gonzaga took a 5-2 lead with its four-run first and another tally in the second. In the fourth, redshirt-sophomore Cody Bartlett walked with two outs and junior Matt Fanelli reached on an error. Sophomore Garry Kuykendall delivered a two-run double that trimmed the Bulldogs' lead to 5-4. Gonzaga increased its lead to 8-4 with two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth. In the seventh, the Cougars loaded the bases on a single by Prince, double by Jones and a hit by pitch for redshirt-sophomore Jay Ponciano. One out later, Bartlett singled home two runs. After Ponciano took third on a wild pitch, he came home on a balk to account for the final score. The Cougars open a three-game, Pacific-10 Conference series with Washington, Friday at 5:30 p.m. in Pullman. WSU NOTES
