UCLA Takes Series With Convincing 14-0 Victory Over WSU

UCLA's Wes Whistler pitched a seven-hit shutout as the Bruins beat Washington State 14-0 Sunday in the rubber game of a Pacific-10 Conference baseball series at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Whisler (2-4) recorded three strikeouts and and walked one Cougar. He also went 3-for-5 with an RBI.

WSU's (26-22, 6-12 Pac-10) starting pitcher Garrett Alwert (4-3) took the loss, surrendering seven runs, five earned, and eight hits while striking out five Bruins (29-24, 10-8 Pac-10), in 4.1 innings of work.

UCLA accumulated its 14 runs with a single run in the third inning, four scores in both the fourth and eighth innings, three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth.

The Bruins started their scoring series in the third inning when Ryan McCarthy grounded out to second, scoring Jarrad Page.

UCLA took a 5-0 advantage in the fourth, scoring four runs with three singles, a walk and a wild pitch. Chris Denove' single scored Matt Thayer. Preston Griffin singled to score Denove and Page, and advanced to third with on the play. Griffin then scored on a wild pitch.

Brandon Averill drove home three runs in the fifth to give UCLA a 8-0 lead with a home run that scored Thayer and Ryan McCarthy.

McCarthy drove home and scored both Bruin runs in the sixth, hitting a double that scored Page and then after advancing to third on a balk, scored when Whisler singled.

UCLA added its final four runs in the eighth with two hits. Averill doubled to score Whisler and McCarthy, Billy Susdorf and Averill both scored with bases loaded hit by pitches.

The Cougars return to action Wednesday to face Lewis-Clark State in Lewiston at 6:30 p.m. in a non-conference baseball game. Friday, at 6 p.m. WSU will play the first of a three-game Pac-10 baseball series against Oregon State at Bailey-Brayton Field.
