LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Washington State baseball team recorded seven hits, including a pair of doubles by Jeff Miller and a solo home run by Zach McAngus, but couldn't get past No. 24 USC, falling 7-2 Sunday in the finale of the Pacific-10 Conference series. Host Southern California swept the Cougars in the series at Dedeaux Field in Los Angeles.
Cougar (20-32, 0-18 Pac-10) starting pitcher Wayne Daman Jr. (6-5) took the loss after allowing five runs, all earned, and eight hits, while striking out two Trojans over 4.2 innings of work. Senior Dane Renkert held USC scoreless in the last inning for the WSU pitching staff.
USC's (32-15, 12-6 Pac-10) starting pitcher Jack Spradlin (5-2) earned the win after striking out 10 Cougars, allowing seven hits and two runs, both earned, over seven innings on the mound. Paul Koss earned his 10th save of the season, holding WSU hitless over the final two innings of the game.
For the third time in the series WSU scored first, posting one run in the first inning. Jeff Miller led off the inning with a double and after advancing to third on a fly out, scored when Jim Murphy singled to center.
The Trojans answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first. Jeff Clement singled home Matt Cusick, who doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a Billy Hart single. Cyle Hankerd then sacrificed to plate Hart and take the lead, 2-1.
USC added to its lead in the second, scoring one run to take a 3-1 lead. Blake Sharpe, who went 3-for-4 on the day, singled to lead off the inning, stole second and scored on a Matt Cusick sacrifice fly two batters later.
With one out McAngus cut the Trojans lead to 3-2 in the fourth with a solo home run, his second of the season. One batter later, Jason Freeman reached base on a fielding error and advanced to third on the play, but was left stranded when the next batter struck out.
USC added two runs in the fifth and a pair in the eighth to take the 7-2 victory. In the fifth Sharpe hit a two-run triple to score Baron Frost and Darin Vieira. Following two hit by pitches and a catcher's interference, Hart sacrificed to score pinch runner Dale Legaspi for the Trojans first run of the eighth inning. Hankerd then singled to score Cusick, who reached on the catcher's interference, to score the final run of the game.
WSU will host Pac-10 foe UCLA for the final series this spring at Bailey-Brayton Field beginning Friday.
