Final Stats

Washington States starting pitcher, Aaron MacKenzie recorded an eight-inning complete game, allowing just three runs, but the Cougars would only rally for one run as they lost 3-1 to UCLA at Jackie Robinson Stadium in a Pacific-10 Conference baseball game.

"Once he got a feel for his pitches and regained his touch, he pitched outstanding," WSU Head Coach Tim Mooney said. "He competed great, throwing 55 pitches in the first two innings. He refused to let the game get away from him."

MacKenzie (5-7) recorded the loss for WSU (26-21, 6-12 Pac-10) despite allowing only seven hits and three runs, all earned while striking out five batters and walking one.

The Bruins (28-24, 9-8 Pac-10), starting pitcher David Johnson took the win with 6.1 innings of work, allowing six hits, one run and striking out five Cougs.

UCLA took the early lead in the first inning when Brett McMillan scored from second base on a Wes Whisler single up the middle. McMillan led off the inning with a single and advanced when the next batter flied out to right field.

In the second WSU had runners on first and third with one out, but two Cougars struck out, leaving the runners stranded.

UCLA took the 2-0 lead in the second with three singles. Mike Svetlic led off the inning with a bunt, advanced to third when Preston Griffin singled through the right side and then scored when McMillan singled up the middle.

WSU cut the Bruin lead in half by scoring its lone run in the third inning when, with two outs, Jay Miller singled through the left side to drive home Jason Freeman, who doubled to record the first WSU hit of the inning.

Whisler added an insurance run for the Bruins in the fifth inning, hitting a solo home run and giving UCLA the 3-1 lead.

WSU had a bases-loaded, one-out opportunity in the seventh inning but UCLA's center fielder, Jarrad Page beat the Cougar runner at the plate after catching Freeman's fly to center, recording the final two outs of the inning.

The Cougars will face UCLA Sunday at Noon at Jackie Robinson Stadium in the rubber game of the Pac-10 series.
