LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Despite taking a 1-0 early lead, the Washington State baseball team fell to No. 24 USC 9-1 in the first of a three-game Pacific-10 Conference series Friday night at Dedeaux Field in Los Angeles.

WSU (20-30, 0-16) starting freshman pitcher Jayson Miller (2-4) took the loss after allowing six hits, seven run, four earned, while striking out three Trojans over 4.1 innings of work. Senior Brett Sommer came into relieve Miller and rookie Dustin Willis finished the game for the Cougs, allowing no hits or runs in the final inning for the WSU pitching staff.

USC's (30-15, 10-6 Pac-10) ace, Ian Kennedy (10-1) earned the win allowing four hits and one run, which was earned, fanning 14 Cougars over 7.0 innings of work on the mound.

WSU took a 1-0 lead in the first when Brady Everett drove home Jay Miller with a double to right center. Everett led the Cougs at the plate going 2-for-3 with an RBI, which was his team-leading 58th of the season.

The Trojans tied the game 1-1 in the second when Matt Cusick hit a solo home run to right field. USC continued the offensive onslaught, scoring three runs in the third and five runs in the fifth including a Baron Frost grand slam for the 9-1 victory.

USC used two hits in the third, including a Roberto Lopez double to lead off the inning, and two Cougar errors to score three runs. Following a catcher's interference and a fielder's choice, Lopez scored on a WSU throwing error. Billy Hart then scored when Cyle Hankerd grounded out and Frost hit a one-run single to give the Trojans a 4-1 lead.

With one out and the bases loaded in the fifth, Sommer walked Hankerd to plate Lopez. Frost hit his second home run of the season to plate four Trojans and score the final USC runs of the game.

 

 

The two teams will play in the middle game of the series at 2 p.m. Saturday with the finale scheduled to begin at noon Sunday. Both games will be will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker live stats, on usctrojans.com.
