Box Score

PROVO, Utah - Washington State scored five times in the first inning and rolled to a 12-5 victory and two-game sweep against BYU in nonconference baseball, Wednesday.

The win was the seventh in the last nine games for Washington State (26-20). The Cougars travel to No. 30 Washington for a three-game series beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Seattle.

Washington State scored five runs in the top of the first with a lot of help from BYU (19-31). Travis Coulter reached on an error, stole second and scored on a Paul Gran single. After a Jim Murphy walk, Jared Prince reached on a fielder's choice and took second on a throwing error as Gran came home with the second run of the inning. Greg Lagreid walked and Alex Burg reached on an error to load the bases before Scott Suttmeier drove in a run with a ground out. A pair of wild pitches brought in two more runs to cap the rally.

After BYU scored three times in the bottom of the first, Washington State answered with three runs in the top of the second. Shea Vucinich led off with a double, moved to third on a Coulter bunt, and scored on a wild pitch. Gran walked in front of Murphy's 12th home run of the season to increase the WSU lead to 8-3. It was the 30th home run of Murphy's career to tie him with Stefan Bailie (2000-01) for seventh on the Cougars' all-time list. The senior also raised his career-RBI total to 148, ninth-best in Cougar history.

BYU tallied a run in the second to trim its deficit to 8-4 and chase WSU starter Matt Argyropoulos. Connor Lambert (1-0) came in out of the bullpen and stranded BYU runners at first and third to end the innings. Lambert finished with five and two-thirds innings of shutout relief while retiring 17 of the 19 men he faced.

WSU put the came away with two runs in the third. Vucinich knocked in a run with a single and Suttmeier scored on a BYU error. A Suttmeier sacrifice fly in the seventh and a RBI-fielder's choice by Gran in the eighth completed the WSU scoring.
