PULLMAN, Wash. - Tony Renda and Mitch Delfino each collected three hits and California defeated Washington State 9-4 in Pac-12 Conference baseball, Saturday.

California (24-19, 8-12 Pac-12) and Washington State (23-19, 9-10 Pac-12) have each won a game in the weekend series. The rubber match-up is scheduled for noon, Sunday.

"We weren't very good out of the bullpen," Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "When you don't compete at a high level, you are going to get beat and that is what happened tonight."

Both team scored in the first with Washington State's run coming on a two-out, RBI-single by Adam Nelubowich. The Golden Bears took control of the game with a four-run fifth inning. Two of the runs were charged to Washington State starter Joe Pistorese (2-3).

In the fifth, the Cougars got a run back on a run-scoring single by Taylor Ard. However, Matt Flemer (7-3) struck out Nelubowich with the bases loaded to prevent further damage.

After California added a run in the sixth, Washington State responded with two runs in its half of the inning to pull within 6-4. Tommy Richards led off with a double and moved to third on a fly out by Jason Monda. Collin Slaybaugh reached on an infield single to score Richards. Slaybaugh stole second and scored on a single by Ian Sagdal. The rally ended when Kyle Johnson grounded into an inning double play.

The Golden Bears salted the game away in the seventh on a three-run home run by Chad Bunting to snap a 0-for-15 slump.

GAME NOTES
Cougar freshman Nick LaRoy logged two-shutout innings of relief.
