PULLMAN, Wash. - Tommy Richards was 3-for-4 with three RBI to lead Washington State to a 10-4 victory over California in the opener of a three-game Pac-12 Conference baseball series at Bailey-Brayton Field, Friday night.

The Cougars (23-18, 9-9 Pac-12) scored in each of the first-four innings to establish a 9-2 lead and chase California (23-19, 7-12 Pac-12) starter Michael Theofanopoulos (1-4).

"We were pretty consistent offensively early in the ballgame," Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "We responded when they scored and we won a lot of innings tonight."

After the Golden Bears took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first against Cougar starter Tanner Chleborad (4-1), Washington State tied the game in the bottom of the frame when Taylor Ard homered with two out for his 10th home run of the season.

The Cougars took a 2-1 lead in the second when Tommy Richards led off with a double, moved to third on a ground out by Jason Monda and scored on a wild pitch.

California tallied twice in the third, including an unearned run, to regain the lead at 3-2. Washington State responded with five runs in its half of the inning.

Kyle Johnson doubled and took third on a wild pitch. With one out, Taylor Ard was hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners. Derek Jones tied the game with an RBI-single to left. Adam Nelubowich was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Richards followed with a two-run single to put the Cougars on top 5-3. After Monda grounded out, P.J. Jones doubled to score two and increase the lead to 7-3.

In the fourth, Patrick Claussen walked with one out and Ard was hit by a pitch. After Derek Jones was retired, Nelubowich plated Claussen with a single and Ard scored on a wild pitch.

Both teams scored a run in the eighth. The Cougars' scored their run when Derek Jones walked with two outs, moved to third on a Stetson Olson single and scored on a single by Richards.

Kellen Camus pitched four innings in relief and limited the Golden Bears to one run to earn his second save.

GAME NOTES
Washington State defeated California for the fifth-straight time in Pullman...Saturday's game begins at 5:30 p.m.
