Beavers Hold Off WSU 10-6

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State scored four runs in the eighth inning on a Steve Mortimer grand slam, but could not score in the ninth and suffered a 10-6 loss to Oregon State Saturday in a Pacific-10 Conference baseball game at Bailey-Brayton Field.
WSU dropped to 18-26 overall and 4-13 in the Pac-10. Oregon State upped its record to 29-15 and 8-6 in the conference.
Cougar starter Brandon Hundt (6-5) received the loss. Hundt threw six inning, allowing 14 hits and 10 runs. Stephen Copeland (5-2) notched the win for the Beavers, working into the eighth inning.
At the plate, Justin Hart and Jeff LaRue each went 2-for-4. Mortimer's grand slam, his first home run of the season, was his only hit of the game. Andy Jarvis and Paul Richie each had three hits for Oregon State and three other players collected two hits each.
The Cougars got off to a slow start, allowing the Beavers to build a 6-0 lead through the top half of the third inning. In the bottom of the frame, WSU got on the board with two runs to cut the Oregon State lead to 6-2.
The Beavers added one run each in the fourth and fifth innings and two runs in the sixth, stretching their lead to 10-2, before Mortimer's grand slam in the bottom of the eighth.
Mortimer came to the plate with two outs and worked the count full against Copeland, before driving the ball over the right field wall, scoring LaRue, Wes Falkenborg and Derek Bruce, making the score 10-6.
Ty Kline, then Jake Postlewait worked the final 1 1/3 innings for the Beavers, allowing just one hit.
The two teams wrap up the series Sunday at noon at Bailey-Brayton Field.
