PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State could not match Oregon State's offensive output in an 18-1 loss in a Pacific-10 Conference baseball game Friday night at Bailey-Brayton Field.
The loss dropped the Cougars to 18-25 overall and 4-12 in the Pac-10. Oregon State improved to 28-15 and 7-6.
WSU starter Eddie Bonine (6-7) went three innings, allowing seven hits and seven runs to receive the loss. Ben Rowe (7-3) pitched a complete game to notch the win for the Beavers.
The Cougars had nine hits in the game, led by Bookie Gates's 2-for-3 performance. Derek Bruce's solo home run in the seventh inning, his team-leading eighth of the season, accounted for WSU's lone run of the game. Jeff LaRue also added two hits.
Oregon State collected 16 hits. The Beavers were led by Andy Jarvis's 3-for-5, eight-RBI showing, including a grand slam in the top of the ninth inning. Jarvis also had a two-run homer in the sixth. Aaron Mathews was 4-for-6, and three other Beavers had two hits apiece.
The Beavers scored three runs each in the first and second and then added single runs in the third and fifth and two runs in the sixth, building a 10-0 lead, before Bruce's homer in the seventh averted a WSU shutout.
In the top of the ninth, Oregon State added eight runs and Rowe retired the side in the bottom of the frame without allowing a hit.
The two teams continue the series Saturday. First pitch at Bailey-Brayton Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
