Stanford Evens Series with WSU
May 2, 2009
PULLMAN, Wash. - Stanford scored four runs in the ninth inning and defeated Washington State 12-9 in Pacific-10 Conference baseball at Bailey-Brayton Field, Saturday. Both pitching staffs were wild combining to issue 19 walks and one hit batter along with four wild pitches and two balks. The game was tied 8-8 entering the ninth when Stanford (21-19, 9-11 Pac-10) pushed across four runs, three of which were unearned, against WSU (22-19, 11-6 Pac-10) junior Connor Lambert (1-1) and freshman Spencer Jackson. "It was not a good day for the Cougs and we simply did not play well," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "Give credit to Stanford for finding a way to win a sloppy game." The Cardinal scored a run in the first and two in the third to take a 3-0 lead before the Cougars came back with five runs in their half of the third. With one out, redshirt-sophomore Jay Ponciano and sophomore Garry Kuykendall walked. Sophomore Shea Vucinich beat out an infield hit to load the bases and senior Greg Lagreid cleared them with a double off the right field wall that tied the game. Senior Jared Prince followed with a triple off the wall in right and scored on a ground out by freshman Derek Jones to give WSU a 5-3 lead. The Cougars added two runs in the fourth on a RBI-fielder's choice by Kuykendall and a run-scoring single by Lagreid. Stanford rallied to tie the game 7-7 with a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth. Again the Cougars responded, this time with a tally in the sixth to take an 8-7 advantage. Ponciano singled to open the frame. Two batters later, he took second on a ground out by Vucinich. After Lagreid walked, Prince singled to drive in the go-ahead run. The Cardinal tied the game with a run in the eighth before the decisive rally in the ninth. The Cougars' final run came in the ninth on a RBI-double by sophomore Ryan Peterson. The series concludes, Sunday with first pitch scheduled for noon. WSU NOTES
