PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State baseball team fell 17-5 to cross-state rival Washington Friday at Bailey-Brayton Field. The Husky victory gave UW a 1-0 lead in the three-game Pacific-10 Conference series.

WSU(18-25, 0-13 Pac-10) reliever Brett Sommer (0-1) took the loss allowing two runs on five hits in 2.1 innings of work.

Relief pitcher David Dowling (6-0) earned the win for UW (25-17, 5-8 Pac-10) throwing five innings of no-hit ball.

The Cougars took a 4-0 lead after the first three innings off of seven walks and three hits. In the first inning, Kaeo Rubin drew a lead-off walk and scored on a Brady Everett groundout. WSU added a run in the second when Scott Suttmeier hit a single to left to drive home Garrett Kimbrel, who reached base on a single.

WSU posted a pair of runs in the third inning. The two runs came thanks to a bases-loaded walk to Matt Thomas and a Husky balk.

UW tied the game 4-4 in the fourth on one-run singles by Zach Clem, Curt Rindal as well as a two-run single by Nick Bartkoski.

The Cougs scored their final run of the game in the fourth to regain a 5-4 lead. The lone inning run came when Suttmeier was plated on a wild pitch.

The Huskies posted pairs of runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to take a 10-5 lead. The two runs in the sixth come on run-scoring hits by Rundal and Joey Dunn. Matt Hague hit a two-run home run for the two UW runs in the seventh and Taylor Johnson hit a two-run double for the Dawgs in the eighth.

UW added its remaining seven runs of the game in the ninth inning. The seven runs came on two bases-loaded walks, a ground out by Johnson and a bases-loaded three-run double by Rindal.

The Cougars and Huskies play the second game of the three-game series Saturday at Bailey-Brayton Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m.

NOTE: Friday night's match-up between WSU and UW will be aired via tape delay on FSN Northwest Saturday at 5 p.m.
