PULLMAN, Wash. - Bret DeRooy and Richie Ochoa combined for a four-hit shutout and Washington State defeated BYU 3-0 in game one of a nonconference baseball doubleheader, Tuesday at Bailey-Brayton Field.

DeRooy struck out a career-high six in six innings of work while limiting the visiting Cougars (20-17) to two hits. Ochoa (4-1) logged the final-three innings and earned the victory when Washington State (16-19) scored three times in the bottom of the eighth.

In the eighth, Derek Jones walked to open the inning and moved to second on a passed ball. Taylor Ard doubled to drive in Jones with the game's first run against BYU reliever David Parry (0-1). Kolton Mahoney relieved Parry and, one out later, walked three-straight hitters to force home a run. Justin Shutt came on and walked Kyle Johnson to bring in the third run of the inning.

The whitewash was the second-straight for Washington State, the first time since 2007 the Cougars posted back-to-back shutouts.

"We got really good pitching from Bret DeRooy and Richie Ochoa," Washington State Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "It was good to see us continue the momentum we had coming off last Saturday's win."
