PULLMAN, Wash. - Sam Gaviglio pitched six and two-thirds innings of one-run ball to lead No. 22 Oregon State past Washington State 3-2 in a Pacific-10 Conference baseball game at Bailey-Brayton Field, Sunday.

With the victory, the Beavers (21-13, 4-8 Pac-10) avoided a three-game sweep at the hands of the Cougars (21-15, 5-7 Pac-10).

"It's nice to have a series victory, but we had put ourselves in a position to sweep, so we are a bit disappointed," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "You have to tip your hat to Oregon State and Sam Gaviglio."

Oregon State struck for two runs in the top of the first off Travis Cook (0-3) with three singles, a wild pitch and a ground out. WSU picked up its lone run off Gaviglio (2-1) in the bottom of the first on a two-out triple by Michael Weber and a wild pitch.

The Cougars put two runners on in the third, loaded the bases in the fourth and had two aboard in the sixth, but failed to push across the tying run against the Beavers' right-hander.

The Beavers added an insurance run in the ninth against WSU reliever Adam Conley on a walk, an error and a RBI-single by Keith Jennette to take a 3-1 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, Cody Bartlett was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Weber walked with one out and Bartlett stole third with two outs and Brett Jacobs at the plate. Jacobs followed with a double down the right field line to score Bartlett and send Weber to third. Kevin Rhoderick struck out pinch hitter Tommy Richards to end the game and earn his second save of the season.

WSU NOTES
Cody Bartlett doubled in three trips to finish the series 6-for-10 with five extra-base hits and five RBI...James Wise (four and one-third innings) and Paris Shewey (three innings) blanked Oregon State for seven and two-thirds innings...Derek Jones broke his left hand when he was hit by a pitch, Friday and it out two-to-four weeks.
