Cougars Drop Both Games Of Doubleheader to No. 9 Beavers

Corvallis, Ore. - The Washington State baseball team dropped both games of a Pacific-10 Conference doubleheader against No. 9 Oregon State Sunday falling 8-1 in the first game and 7-6 in the nightcap at Goss Field at Coleman Stadium. With the pair of losses Sunday, WSU was unable to avoid the three-game sweep by OSU.
Jimmy Freeman (6-4), WSU's (18-23, 0-12 Pac-10) starting pitcher in the first game, took the loss for the Cougars working seven innings allowing six runs, five earned, on nine hits. In the second game WSU used seven pitchers, but it was relief pitcher Travis Webb (0-5) who took the loss. Webb faced two batters in the game allowing two runs on one hit.
Oregon State's (30-7, 9-3 Pac-10) starting pitcher in the opening game, Anton Maxwell (7-0), earned the win. Maxwell threw a one-hit complete game for the Beavers. The one hit allowed by Maxwell was a solo home run by Cougar Brady Everett. In the nightcap, OSU relief pitcher Kevin Gunderson earned the win pitching two innings allowing three hits and one run.
Everett led WSU at the plate, going 4-for-9 for the day with a home run, two runs driven home and two runs scored.
In the opening game, the Cougs' only hit and run of the game came in the sixth inning thanks to Everett's team-leading ninth homer of the season, with a shot to right field.
Oregon State jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first game with three runs in the first and a pair of runs in the second. Darwin Barney drove home two runs in the first with a double down the left field line and then scored the third run of the inning on a balk. In the second, the pair of runs came from a single by Andy Jenkins and a sacrifice fly by Cole Gillespie. Gillespie also hit another sacrifice fly in the fourth to give the Beavers a 6-0 lead.
The remaining Beaver runs game in the eighth inning on a solo home run by Jacoby Ellsbury and a one-run single by Jenkins.
Oregon State gained an early 4-0 lead in the second game with a pair of runs in both the second and third innings. The Beavers scored two runs in the second on a single to right by Tyler Graham. Mitch Canham hit a two-run homer to right in the third to give OSU the 4-0 lead.
The Cougars scored unearned runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Zach Kosturos, who reached on a fielding error, scored the run in the fourth with a single by Jason Freeman. Jeff Miller scored a run in the fifth inning on a single by Matt Thomas. WSU had an opportunity to add more runs to its total in the sixth, but left the bases loaded to end the inning.
WSU took a 6-4 lead in the eighth inning by plating four runs. The four runs came on a wild pitch, a single by Everett and a two-run single by Miller.
The Cougs were unable to maintain to the lead for long, allowing three runs in the bottom of the eighth that came from a bases loaded double by Jenkins.
WSU resumes play Wednesday, April 27, when it travels to Lewiston to take on Lewis-Clark State at Harris Field at 6 p.m.
