April 23, 2011
CORVALLIS, Ore. - James Wise and two Washington State relievers combined on a four-hit shutout as the Cougars knocked off No. 3 Oregon State 2-0, Saturday in Pacific-10 Conference baseball.
Wise (4-4) struck out five in seven and two-thirds innings to earn the victory. Anthony Drobnick recorded the final out in the eighth Paris Shewey worked the ninth for his Pac-10 leading seventh save of the season.
"We finally put a complete game together," Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "When we needed a game the most, James Wise came up big for us. Before the game, he was confident and there was no doubt in his mind he was going to win today."
Washington State (15-19, 3-12 Pac-10) earned its first shutout of Oregon State (29-8, 10-2 Pac-10) since March 22, 1998 (9-0 in game two of a doubleheader). It was the first shutout of the Beavers in Corvallis for the Cougars since game two of a doubleheader, April 28, 1990 (7-0).
The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the third on a one-out walk to Cody Bartlett and back-to-back singles by Brett Jacobs and Derek Jones. In the sixth, Washington State added a run on one-out singles by Taylor Ard and Jason Monda and a two-out, infield hit from Jay Ponciano.
After allowing an infield single in the first, Wise did not give up another hit until the sixth, including a stretch where he retired 10-straight hitters. In the seventh, he fanned pinch hitter Dylan Jones looking with runners at second and third to squelch a threat.
In the eighth, Wise yielded a walk and a single with two outs to put runners at first and second. Drobnick came in to punch out Kavin Keyes on a 3-2 pitch to end the inning.
Shewey gave up a one-out single in the ninth, but induced Tyler Smith to hit into a game-ending 4-6-3 double play. The save moved the southpaw into sole possession of seventh place on the Cougar single-season list and into a tie for fifth on the Washington State career list.
The Cougars return home Monday to face BYU at 5:30 p.m. in the first of a two-game series.
