Beavers Score Late to Beat Cougars

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Danny Hayes singled in the bottom of the ninth to score Jared Norris and No. 3 Oregon State defeated Washington State 7-6 in Pacific-10 Conference baseball, Friday.

The deciding blow came off Paris Shewey (1-1) and made a winner out of Tony Bryant (3-1), the fourth Oregon State (29-7, 10-1 Pac-10) pitcher in the game.

The Cougars (14-19, 2-12 Pac-10) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first against Beaver starter Sam Gaviglio. Cody Bartlett singled to open the frame for the first of his four hits in the game. After a sacrifice bunt by Jay Ponciano, Derek Jones doubled to plate Bartlett. Taylor Ard singled to score Jones and Jason Monda capped the rally with his second home run of the season.

The Beavers chipped away at their deficit with a run in the first and another in the third before chasing Cougar starter Chad Arnold with two runs in the sixth to tie the game 4-4. Washington State responded with a pair of runs in the seventh to go back on top at 6-4.

Adam Nelubowich led off with a single. Trace Tam Sing sacrificed Nelubowich to second and reached with the bunt was misplayed for an error. Both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Kyle Johnson and Bartlett gave the Cougars the lead with a two-run triple.

Shewey came on in the eighth after Richie Ochoa recorded four outs in relief of Arnold. The Beavers tied the game in the inning on a walk, double, sacrifice fly and single.

The series concludes Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
