April 23, 2010
PULLMAN, Wash. - Chad Arnold tossed a complete game five-hitter and Washington State defeated No. 22 Oregon State 5-1 in the opener of a three-game Pacific-10 Conference baseball series at Bailey-Brayton Field, Friday. Arnold (4-2) struck out a career-high 11, did not allow a hit after the fifth inning, and retired 13 of the final 14 men he faced. "That was a great performance by Chad Arnold," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "It is exactly what we needed from one of the leaders on our ball club." Washington State (20-14, 4-6 Pac-10) scored three times in the bottom of the third against Oregon State (20-12, 3-7 Pac-10) starter Greg Peavey (3-1). Cody Bartlett opened the inning with a double. Kyle Johnson moved Bartlett to third with a sacrifice bunt and when Peavey threw the ball wide of first base, Bartlett scored and Johnson took second. Johnson moved to third on a fly ball by Garry Kuykendall and scored on a ground out by Shea Vucinich. Derek Jones followed with his eighth home run of the season to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead. Oregon State's lone run came in the fifth on a single, sacrifice bunt, wild pitch and a double. WSU added two runs in the seventh on a single by Jay Ponciano, a RBI-double by Bartlett and a run-scoring single by Johnson. The teams meet again Saturday at 2 p.m. WSU NOTES
