CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Washington State baseball team fell 5-4 to the No. 9 Oregon State Beavers, surrendering the winning run in the ninth inning, Friday night in a Pacific-10 Conference game at Gross Stadium.

"We played as well as we have any other Friday night," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "We had a great performance by our pitching staff tonight, Oregon State just pulled through with a big hit. They (OSU) are a good ball club and tonight, we played well enough to beat them."

WSU (18-21, 0-10 Pac-10) sophomore Travis Webb (0-4) took the loss after throwing three innings of work out of the bullpen, allowing only one hit and one run. Freshman Jayson Miller started the game for the Cougars working 4.2 innings allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits.

Oregon State (28-7, 7-3 Pac-10) relief pitcher Kevin Gunderson (3-2) earned the win, facing three batters in the ninth inning, striking out one Cougar. Beaver starting pitcher Dallas Buck saw eight innings of work, allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits, while recording six strikeouts.

The Cougars scored early in the game, posting three runs in the first inning. Zach Kosturos hit a bases loaded single to right field to plate Brady Everett and Kaeo Rubin for the first two runs of the game. Jim Murphy scored the remaining inning run on an infield hit by Zach McAngus.

WSU tied the game 4-4 in the seventh inning when Kaeo Rubin scored his second run of the evening on a Beaver fielding error. The Cougars had the opportunity to add more runs to their total during the inning, but were unsuccessful, leaving the bases loaded to end the inning.

 

 

Oregon State posted its' first runs of the game in the second inning on a fielding error and an infield single by Casey Priseman.

The Beavers scored single runs in the third and fourth innings, as well as the game winning run in the ninth. Darwin Barney drove home a run in the third with a single up the middle to score Jacoby Ellsbury. In the fifth inning, Tyler Graham scored on a single by Andy Jenkins.

With the game tied 4-4 going into the bottom of the ninth inning, Oregon State looked to avoid extra innings, and were successful. The Beavers scored the game-winning run on a single by Jenkins, plating Graham, who had singled with one out in the inning.

WSU and OSU will face off Saturday afternoon in the second game of the three-game series at Gross Stadium. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
