CORVALLIS, Ore. - Washington State tallied once in the top of ninth and had the tying run at the plate, but fell 4-2 at No. 3 Oregon State in the opener of a three-game Pacific-10 Conference series, Thursday.

Trailing 4-1, the Cougars (14-18, 2-11 Pac-10) received a leadoff single from Derek Jones. Taylor Ard followed with a single that was misplayed in the outfield to allow Jones to score and Ard to reach second.

Ard's hit brought Tony Bryant on in relief of Oregon State (28-7, 9-1 Pac-10) starter James Nygren (6-1). Bryant retired Matt Argyropoulos on a ground out, struck out Jason Monda and induced a ground out from pinch hitter Adam Nelubowich to earn his sixth save.

Oregon State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first against Adam Conley (4-5) on a double and a two-out error by Cougars' right fielder Derek Jones.

Washington State tied the game in the fourth when Jones led off the frame with his sixth home run of the season. It was the 30th home run of Jones's career and moved him into a tie for eighth place with Stefan Bailie on WSU's career list.

The Beavers broke the tie in the seventh on a single and back-to-back doubles to take a 3-1 lead. After a sacrifice bunt, J.D. Leckenby relieved Conley. Two batters later, an infield single plated another run to put Oregon State on top 4-1.

"We got what we deserved," Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "When you don't play good baseball, you're going to lose."

The series continues Friday at 5:35 p.m.
