Cougar Baseball Loses to Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona collected 16 hits and the No. 21 Wildcats defeated No. 28 Washington State 13-6 in a Pacific-10 Conference baseball game, Saturday. The victory for Arizona (25-9, 6-5 Pac-10) was its second-straight over the Cougars (19-13, 3-5 Pac-10). The Wildcats will attempt to complete a series sweep, Sunday with game time schedule for noon. After the Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, WSU answered with two runs in the second and a pair in the third. Michael Weber opened the second with a single and took second on a single by Patrick Claussen. With one out, Matt Argyropoulos doubled to score both runners and give the Cougars a 2-1 lead. In the third, Garry Kuykendall led off with single and went to second on a one-out single by Derek Jones. Michael Weber followed with a two-run double to put WSU on top 4-1. The Wildcats tied the game with three runs, including one unearned, in the bottom of the third. Arizona added four runs in the fourth to take an 8-4 lead and chase WSU starter David Stilley (1-1). Rafael Valenzuela's three-run double in the fifth against Connor Lambert increased the Wildcats' lead to 11-4. Arizona tacked on two runs in the seventh against Cougar reliever Richie Ochoa to go up 13-4. Jones belted a solo home run in the top of the eighth and J.K. Dykes singled in a run in the ninth to account for the final score. Kyle Simon (6-2) earned the win for Arizona despite giving up six runs on 10 hits in eight-plus innings. WSU NOTES
