TUCSON, Ariz. - Kurt Heyer struck out 14 in eight and two-thirds innings and Arizona defeated Washington State 5-3 in the opener of a three-game Pacific-10 Conference baseball series, Friday.

The No. 28 Cougars (19-12, 3-4 Pac-10) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Matt Fanelli and Michael Weber opened the frame with back-to-back singles. Brett Jacobs moved the runners up with a sacrifice bunt and Matt Argyropoulos plated Fanelli with a sacrifice fly.

The No. 21 Wildcats (24-9, 5-5 Pac-10) answered with two runs in the bottom of the second against WSU starter Chad Arnold (3-2).

In the third, Shea Vucinich was hit by a pitch with one out. Derek Jones followed with a single and Vucinich came all the way around to score when the ball was misplayed in the outfield. After Jones's single, Heyer (6-0) faced the minimum over the next five and two-thirds innings and recorded a stretch of 14-straight hitters retired.

Arizona picked up a couple of unearned runs in the third and added a single tally in the seventh for a 5-2 lead. Jones led off the top of the ninth with his sixth home run of the season and trimmed the Wildcats' advantage to 5-3. With two outs, pinch hitter Patrick Claussen drew a walk.
