PULLMAN, Wash. - Senior Alex Burg's two-run triple capped a three-run seventh inning and Washington State rallied past Arizona 5-4 in the opener of a three-game Pacific-10 Conference series, Friday.

The Cougars (16-16, 6-4 Pac-10) trailed 4-2 when sophomore Matt Argyropoulos opened the seventh with a triple off the center field wall. One out later, freshman pinch hitter Patrick Claussen walked and sophomore Shea Vucinich dropped down a bunt single on a safety squeeze to cut the Arizona (16-17, 3-10 Pac-10) lead to 4-3. Burg followed with a fly ball to center field that went for a triple when the Wildcats' Hunter Pace stumbled and fell shy of the warning track.

The late heroics made a winner out of senior Matt Way (5-3) who went eight innings, gave up one earned run, and struck out 10. Redshirt-junior Jeremy Johnson worked the ninth for his fourth save. Preston Guilmet (2-4) suffered the loss for the Wildcats.

"For me it was about Matt Way tonight," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "He gave us eight quality innings. He kept us in the game and gave us a chance to come back late. It was a typical start for him."

Washington State grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first. Vucinich led off with a double and freshman Derek Jones walked with one out. Senior Greg Lagreid singled and Vucinich scored on the play when the ball got away from Arizona right fielder Steve Selsky. Jones was cut down on the play at the plate and Lagreid took second. Two batters later, junior Michael Weber singled to score Lagreid and put the Cougars on top 2-0.

Arizona answered with a run in the second and added three in third on a home run by Jett Bandy with two men aboard. Way responded by setting down the next 11 men he faced after the Bandy home run.

The series continues, Saturday at 2 p.m.
